There is no miracle cream for wrinkles, but extra care can lessen their appearance
by Laura Dayton
“As much as the next woman, I’d love to believe there was a cream that would erase wrinkles,” says esthetician Marta Chavalas, “but that just isn’t so. I’ve seen thousands of faces and the best skin always comes from a combination of genetics and preventative care.”
The best prevention is sun protection. This is most important for people with fair skin but it applies to everyone and everywhere.
“People forget that damaging sun rays can get through clouds, car windows and single layered clothes,” says Marta, a former Ujena staff makeup artist and stylist. Marta recommends an everyday SPF of at least 18, and much higher if you’re going to be in the sun. Avoiding the sun is even better advice: wear hats, seek shade, carry an umbrella and avoid facing directly into the sun.
Skin Care
“If we treated our skin as delicately as we treat a newborn baby we’d all have fewer wrinkles,” says Marta. That means no harsh scrubbing, especially with abrasives and chemical soaps, no extremes—hot or cold—and no creams [including makeup] that contain alcohol or other drying agents. Around the very delicate skin of the eyes, tap, not rub when you’re washing and applying makeup and lotion.”
Learning to sleep on your back is a good idea. You might also consider silk pillowcases, and make sure any pillow that may touch your face is clean! If you have acne, see a professional to reduce unnecessary scarring. A program of professional extractions as well as a soothing facial should be part of every woman’s skin regimen, even if it’s just twice a year!
Rating the Wrinkle Creams
Women will still spend billions of dollars on face creams and wrinkle minimizers. For that reason we’ve gone to Consumer Reports for their ratings of the better wrinkle protection creams on the market today.
According to Consumer Reports:
“In our first test of wrinkle creams [we found that] even the best performers reduced the average depth of wrinkles by less than 10 percent, a magnitude of change that was, alas, barely visible to the naked eye. “Moreover, the luxury-priced skin-care offerings didn’t work any better than the drugstore brands. La Prairie Cellular, the most costly product we tested ($335 for an ounce of day cream and 1.7 ounces of night cream) was among the least effective. Our top-rated product line, available at a drugstore near you, is Olay Regenerist–as it happens, the nation’s best-selling brand of wrinkle cream–which cost about $19 apiece for the “enhancing lotion,” “perfecting cream,” and “regenerating serum” combination that the company recommends.”
Here are their ratings:
