Despite the claims that bikini atoll and the French introduced the bikini, it was Paula Stafford at Australia’s holiday capital that introduced the world to what has become the greatest revolution to women’s swimwear, and unlikely ever to be surpassed.  Coined the bikini, the style has become synonymous with gorgeous beach babes, sun drenched beach holidays, relaxation and inspired many calendars, fashion front covers and beach competitions.  The bikini is the essence of summer.  Who would have thought that two tiny pieces of lycra could possibly capture the wide imagination of the world that it in fact has.

But after nearly 60 years, the bikini, in style remains the same, however design has changed with the contemporary demands of fashion and designers are designing swimwear that is fun, funky and flirty and celebrates everything that is summer, meeting the expectation of the modern girl looking for a fashion statement as much as a practical and functional garment for the water.

Small on Top

If you’re small on top, you may want to try the newest, little swimsuits from Brazil. The Brazilian woman is generally smaller on top than the Australian girl, and their swimsuits are cut accordingly. Look for tops with a touch of padding, or an under wire, demi-bra style that makes the most of a beautiful, dainty, bust line. Try to find a top with adjustable straps at shoulders and around back so that you can tighten and adjust things, to help fill out the top line. You are very lucky that you have the body to wear those cute, ruffled tops that are so hot right now, so go for it. And as for bandeau tops, only you can wear those well. You can also show off in those tiny, tri-tops that the big busted girls only dream about. Avoid tops with too much fabric or have a poor fit. Opt for separates, where you can choose your top and bottom separately.

Big on Top

You may need some extra support; underwire tops can work well and look great. Halter-top bikinis can be a good choice by offering support, while providing some sexy cleavage too. Look for styles that are banded around the midriff and can be tied in back and around the neck. This style will give you some lift and will allow you to make adjustments for a personal fit.Look for one-piece swimsuits with some structure in the bust, such as soft foam cups or at least, a shelf bra. Straight cut bust styles such as a classic tank can look clean and sporty. Wide shoulder straps will also be much more comfortable than thin, spaghetti straps. Avoid strapless bandeau tops and those tiny, tri-tops that offer minimal coverage. Again, make sure to get a suit where you can order the top and bottom sizes separately.

No Waist

No problem. It’s not that you don’t have a waist, it’s that you hips are slim. If you don’t have many curves, create some by wearing one-piece suit with a high-on-the-thigh cut. A belted waistline on a one-piece suit will give the appearance of a whittled middle. So will a draped, surplice detail that pinches in at the waist, or a curvy seam line that runs down each side of the torso. Bikinis are good for you. Add some illusion at the hips with rings, ruffles and bows. If you’re small on top, go for a strapless bandeau. Go for a dark, solid bottom and a wildly printed or embellished top. Avoid solid-colored or horizontal striped one-pieces.

Plus size figure

Show a little skin in just the right places and you will look seductively svelte and super sexy! Look for one-piece swimsuits with lace or mesh inserts. A strategically placed cut-out, or a deep V neckline, can really change your visual image. Lengthen your thigh with an adjustable ruching detail at the hip. A sheer sarong can give you a little confidence and still look totally glamorous. Dark, cool colors are always good. So are swirling, or V patterns. Try a swimsuit with dark, solid panels down each side of the torso and a floral printed middle. Avoid too much fabric. Modesty is certainly OK, but too much coverage is not necessarily a better option. Also, stay away from white, as well as bright, neon fabrics and those nappy textiles.

Big on Bottom

The newest, mini-skirted bikinis are too cute and made just for you! Don’t go for a super frilly one, though. Instead, pick a smooth, skimming skirt that is short and sweet, but covers what it needs to. A ruffled or highly decorated top is OK though. The details will draw attention to your top half. You could also go for a moderate, bottom bikini that has a 3 inch side…very chic! Make that a solid bottom and print top for a super effect.Avoid boy shorts, too skimpy bottoms, or lots of ruffles and details at the hips.

Sarongs

Footwear

Headwear

What you wear on your head can define an outfit, and there is little middle ground: it’s either in or out, so keep an eye out for passing trends. That said, there are some eternal no-nos…..first and foremost the comedy hat – what better way to show people you’ve got a sense of humour, right? Wrong. Novelty hats are as bad as shellsuits and mullets. It’s not big and its not clever. Bandana’s may help to keep hair off your face whilst look stylish, but its definitely doesn’t suit you sir, and remember hankerchief’s will just lead to comparisons with George Formby.

Accessories

Too much jewellery is never a good thing and should be kept to a minimum. A single surf-style necklace or leather bracelet can work for you, but looking like an extra from Pirates of the Caribbean will not.

Try to keep your sunglasses simple. Sharp-angled, sports shades with rainbow coloured lens’ won’t suit everyone. If you don’t suit the surfer/tour de france look, try going all broody and Top Gun with a pair of aviator shades.

The beach is for posing, not for exercise, so only get active if you are athletic by nature, playing with a bat and ball on your own won’t win you admiring glances. But being energetic isn’t the only way to perk the interest of the more discerning members of the public. Display your powerful intellect with a carefully chosen book, a classic or current bestseller will help give the impression your as deep as the ocean in front of you. Whereas a graphic novel or a copy of Guns and Ammo will send the ladies into a faster retreat than the Red Army.

First, lets talk about the preparation.  A couple of days before you venture out, get a spray tan, it will make you look skinnier and lessen any cellulite or skin imperfections that you may have.  Also, start drinking a lot of water, this will flush out any toxins that are making you bloated making you look your best.

The day of the shopping trip, put some makeup on and do your hair, it’s amazing how a pretty face can make clothes of any description look so much better.  Don’t eat a massive dinner the day before, don’t eat for 2 hours before you shop and go to the toilet so your stomach is as flat as possible.

When you enter the store go straight to what you want, don’t get side tracked by the pretty colors or pictures your there to fulfill you mission, to buy a swimsuit for summer.  Take at least 5 swimsuits in with you,if one doesn’t look so great you may become disillusioned so put the next one on as quickly as possible.  Get a size bigger than you think you need, it’s always easier to say to the shop assistant “I think I need a size smaller” than “I think I need a size bigger” this can be humiliating when the shop is full of people.

Once you have chosen your swimsuit and you’re looking fabulous, pay and leave the swimsuit shop immediately, don’t give yourself time to second guess your purchase.

Of course swimsuit shopping online is a great alternative, you can pick a ’skinny’ mirror, light yourself nicely and wait till your having a ‘thin day’, then try on your swimwear.  Most online stores have generous returns policies so if it doesn’t fit or you don’t like it, try again!

In 1946, Louis Reard, an engineer – and a Frenchman, of course! – fashioned a two-piece women’s swimsuit from 30 inches of fabric. Reard’s rival in bikini design, Jacques Helm, was actually the first to create the iconic two-piece swimsuit of the 20th century. Helm called his design the “atome” in a nod to the smallest particle in the world known at the time. A marketing genius, Reard introduced his skimpy two-piece design five days after the United States began atomic tests in the Bikini Atoll and named it “bikini” to suggest that it would have the same explosive impact on society as an A-bomb.

The bikini is a women’s two-piece swimsuit that covers the breast and groin areas. It was considered risqué when it first appeared in 1946, but the two-piece design was actually a throwback to very ancient times. Wikipedia cites the earliest form of a bikini appearing in the Chalcolithic Era (3500 BCE to 1700BCE). Bikinis appear in ancient Roman mosaics and murals, suggesting they were popular as swimming costumes among Roman women. Archaeologists have found Minoan wall paintings (circa 1600 BCE) showing a two-piece design very similar to the modern bikini, and women wearing bikinis appear on ancient Greek urns, ancient Sicilian floor mosaics, and statues from Pompeii.

Bikinis were accepted as mainstream swimwear fashion on the French Riviera long before being embraced by the public in the United States. The bikini was introduced to the U.S. in 1947, but its scandalous status remained in force well into the 1950s. Many American cities even passed laws to prohibit the wearing of a bikini in public. In 1957, Modern Girl magazine stated “It is hardly necessary to waste words over the so-called bikini since it is inconceivable that any girl with tact and decency would ever wear such a thing.” American women didn’t really jump on the bikini bandwagon until the late 1960s with the start of the so-called Sexual Revolution.
