Look your best on and off the beach this summer
by Laura Dayton
Dark colors slim, large prints embolden, stripes move the eye, details capture the eye. These are some fashion style basics, but even these rules can bend. Your best fashion advice will most likely come from your best friend—as long as she isn’t color blind or your total opposite when it comes to class and style.
You can also consult a professional. As a model your makeup artist is going to be your best source for identifying eye, lip and complexion colors. Some department stores have style consultants you can hire. Personally, I take a friend whose own style I admire when I go shopping
However, there are some general rules that apply to flatter your body type. Remember, the types are generalities and many of us have characteristics from two types. Also, as we age, our body types can change.
Round or Apple Shapes
These women often have heavier breasts, soft middles, narrow hips and skinny legs. You want to show off your great legs and cleavage.
Halter tops are made for big busts. Wide straps provide excellent support in dresses and swimwear. You never want to wear tops too small and you don’t to wear baggy tops; they’ll just make you look heavy.
Opt for fabrics that skim the body with stretch for a better fit. V-neck, boat neck, turtle and mock necks look classy. Avoid full or puffy sleeves.
Play up those legs in high cut swimwear. Balance out a heavy top with an A-line skirt. Choose jeans with lots of pockets. Avoid covering up from head to toe. Show a little skin whether it’s bare arms and shoulders or a bare back.
Pears Shapes
Pears usually have a slender neck, narrow shoulders, small bust, shapely waist, generous hips and full thighs. Ruffled and detailed tops in swimwear and blouses flatter a small bust. So do strapless or sleeveless dresses. Square or cowl necklines broaden the shoulders.
An empire waist draws attention away from the hips. A line skirts are a must—avoid any fit that is tight across the hips, it only accentuates them. A boot cut pant leg is best.
Brick or Straight Shapes
Usually the upper and lower bodies are equal in width, and if you gain pounds they would most likely be distributed evenly. You want to choose swimwear and tops that elongate the upper body and neck. Deep V’s are best. Tankini tops are always flattering. Avoid belts or pleated fabrics at the waistline.
Wear longer jackets and pants with lots of details and pockets.
Hourglass Shapes
A full bust, defined waist, and shapely hips and legs characterize this curvy shape. Accentuate an hourglass figure by wearing bikinis, and belts, or tops and bottoms with defined waistlines.
Wrap shirts, skirts and dresses flatter most every shape. Hourglass figures would look for separate tops and bottoms to ensure a good fit. Also, fabrics with some stretch always wear well on this type of body.
Other Swimwear Tips
Print tankinis are a great way to hide an extra few pounds. If you have a long torso, consider a one-piece: very flattering. A matching skirt is a must for big bottoms and since it’s summer and Mrs. Obama’s in office, bare arms are definitely a look that’s in.
